What Business Leaders Can Learn From an Ancient Roman Emperor, Part 3: Choose Rationality Over Emotion

In this lesson, we’ll dive into how Marcus Aurelius used rational thought to handle a major betrayal, focusing on the story of his conflict with Avidius Cassius.

The Betrayal of Avidius Cassius

Avidius Cassius was one of Marcus Aurelius’ top generals, a trusted and respected leader in the Roman army. However, in 175 AD, Cassius betrayed Marcus by declaring himself Emperor of Rome. He believed rumors that Marcus had died and saw an opportunity to seize power.

Marcus’ Reaction: Rationality Over Emotion

Marcus’ response to this betrayal is a perfect example of rational thinking in action.

  1. Understanding, Not Immediate Anger: Instead of reacting with anger or seeking revenge, Marcus first tried to understand why Cassius had acted this way. He thought about Cassius’ fears and pressures. This was like a boss trying to understand why an employee made a big mistake, instead of immediately firing them.
  2. Seeking Peaceful Solutions: Marcus didn’t rush into a war. He first tried to solve the issue without violence. He sent messages to Cassius, offering a chance to talk and sort things out. This approach showed Marcus’ belief in solving conflicts through understanding, not just force.
  3. Compassionate Response to Cassius’ Death: Cassius was eventually killed by his own soldiers. Marcus could have punished Cassius’ family and supporters, but he chose forgiveness instead. He pardoned them, breaking the cycle of revenge that was common in Roman politics. This was like choosing to mend relationships instead of holding grudges.

The Takeaway for Us

Marcus Aurelius’ handling of the betrayal teaches us about the power of rational and empathetic leadership.

For Modern Leaders:

  • Understand Before Reacting: When faced with a problem, especially one involving people, try to understand the situation fully before making a decision. This can prevent unnecessary conflicts.
  • Look for Peaceful Solutions: Even in business, where competition is fierce, try to resolve disputes calmly. It’s often better to negotiate than to fight.
  • Respond with Empathy: Show compassion and understanding, even when you have been wronged. This can lead to better long-term relationships and a more positive environment.

Marcus Aurelius’ story with Avidius Cassius highlights the importance of rational and empathetic responses to challenging situations. It’s a lesson about the strength of calm and thoughtful leadership, even in the face of betrayal or conflict.
