Avidius Cassius was one of Marcus Aurelius’ top generals, a trusted and respected leader in the Roman army. However, in 175 AD, Cassius betrayed Marcus by declaring himself Emperor of Rome. He believed rumors that Marcus had died and saw an opportunity to seize power.
Marcus’ Reaction: Rationality Over Emotion
Marcus’ response to this betrayal is a perfect example of rational thinking in action.

- Compassionate Response to Cassius’ Death: Cassius was eventually killed by his own soldiers. Marcus could have punished Cassius’ family and supporters, but he chose forgiveness instead. He pardoned them, breaking the cycle of revenge that was common in Roman politics. This was like choosing to mend relationships instead of holding grudges.
