If you stop the habit I am going to be mentioning, as much as it is possible, it will skyrocket your productivity and your business’s productivity tremendously. That habit is multitasking. Most people think that by doing multi-tasking they are being productive on more than one thing at one time. In reality, they are ruining two things at the same time! For the most part, multitasking is something that leads to decreased productivity and an increase in errors. Studies consistently show that multi-tasking over a period of time leads to a variety of health problems and makes us prone to accidents. Some people get into accidents while looking at the phone while driving, some burn their clothes and over boil the milk at the same time, while some send “I love you” text messages that they intended for their spouse, to their boss. Sometimes, if the boss likes them, they might get an “I love you too” in response.
But some people still pride on themselves being amazing multi-taskers. This small game will shatter this myth once and for all and make you realize how much of energy you are wasting by switching between tasks constantly. So here is what you do.
Please write down the following.

The above has 42 letters and 42 numbers in total. How much time did it take for you to write the entire sentence and the numbers 1 to 42? It was probably simple and straightforward and didn’t take long.
Now let’s do some MULTITASKING. Let’s see how long you take if you switch things up a little. How long would it take for you to write down the same amount of letters and the numbers but switch to a corresponding number next to every letter?
In other words, what I want you to do is to try writing M 1 u 2 l 3 and so on till u 42 at the end.
Chances are it will confuse you, stress you out and take you longer to write the SAME amount of letters and numbers! Even if you use some “hack” to do this faster, even using the hack means you are switching back to single tasking instead of truly multi-tasking.
If you REALLY want to see how ineffective and time consuming Multi-tasking is, do the this exercise as per the exact instructions. You will be gobsmacked !
So the lesson here is this.
- As far as possible, focus on only one thing at one time.
- You can listen to the radio while driving the car, you can listen to music at the gym but when it comes to two distinct work related activities, both of which require your complete attention, it is best to focus only on one activity at one time.
- Even if you cannot fully control your work schedule and some multi-tasking is inevitable, it is a good idea to pick one particular big problem area at one time instead of jumping back and forth between tasks constantly
- Implement single minded focused approach to work and see your productivity and your business’s productivity skyrocket!
