Do you feel hard to learn how to stay motivated?  Don’t worry it is far too common, in fact spells of not being motivated are common even in those who seem to be motivated all the time, including those in the motivational business!

However, there are many tips that would be helpful in order for you in order to stay motivated even when you don’t feel like it.  I would recommend you to read this article and then more importantly apply it. Remember, learning is half the battle, the other half is applying what you learnt. That being said, let’s get going with the top ten ways on how to stay motivated!

1) Promise yourself a reward only after something is done.

Here you can entice yourself to do something you don’t enjoy in order to obtain a reward that you enjoy. This is a form of extrinsic motivation where you do a job not out of the love of it but because you are motivated by what you get after completing it.  The activity may not seem as enjoyable but you will still be motivated to get the job done if you know there is a reward waiting for you. However, practise self discipline! Don’t give yourself the reward without completing the work!

2)  Get to doing the job without thinking much.

The major cause of stress is not the job itself but thinking again and again about how you ought to be doing doing the job. The more you think about how you ought to be doing it or how difficult it is, ironically, the more likely you are to avoid it. Stop thinking, start doing. It doesn’t matter whether the job is completed or not because something is better than nothing in most circumstances.  Although you will realize that once you actually shake off the inertia and get to doing the job, more often than not you will go all the way because instead of worrying about doing it, you are now actually doing it.

3)  Have clarity of purpose

Understanding why you are doing something and doing so on a deep level makes a difficult job much easier. On the other hand, the most easiest job in the world can seem very hard if you don’t even know why you are doing it.  Muhammad Ali was asked if he loved training for competitions. He said he hated every single minute of it. But he did it anyway because he had extreme clarity of purpose. He said he was willing to train hard and suffer everyday for a few years and then lead the rest of his life being known as a great champion. A legendary champion he became indeed.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was asked how he could manage to lift excruciatingly heavy weights for 5 hours a day 6 days a week. He said he could do it only because he knew what he wanted and that was to be the greatest bodybuilding champion in the world. Working out so hard and lifting heavy weights again and again and again is impossible for someone who doesn’t even know why they are doing it!  Unless you know why you are doing something you will usually do a terrible job at it. Have clarity of purpose and everything will become unbelievably simpler.

4. Break down Big tasks into smaller ones.

Seeing things as a whole makes them look overwhelmingly big. Chunk it down into small bits. Concentrate on the parts and soon you will finish the whole of it. If you have an yearly goal break, in order to hit it effectively you need to a chunk it down into a six monthly goal, then further into a monthly goal, then a weekly goal, a daily goal and even an hourly goal. As long as you keep hitting your hourly goal, the yearly goal will be achieved automatically. This strategy is a great way to increase your productivity. But remember to remind yourself why you are doing it. That will keep you motivated while you work hard on a daily basis.

5) Believe in yourself.

Believing you can do something makes it much more easier to do it.  People who believe something is possible actually put in the effort to make it possible.  Those who believe something is not possible have a much harder time pursuing a goal. As a result of that lack of belief they are also much more likely to give up when the going gets tough.  Keep believing that you can do something and eventually you will be able to do it. Barring certain laws of the universe that make some things impossible, everything else is really possible!

A simple way to build belief is to do one things one step at a time. At first your belief will be very low or non existent but you will have to still convince yourself to take the first step. When you do take that first step and realize that you can do that thing, you will build up courage, belief and skill and as a consequence doing the same thing will become easier and easier and easier!

6.  Change your environment.

This one is  a little tough but can be done if you put in a conscious effort to do it. As children we have no control over what families we are born in, what views we are brainwashed with and what environment we grow up in. However as we become adults we begin to develop more and more of an ability to do so.  But social conditioning is hard to change even if you change your physical environment so you will have to work really hard on doing so.

Cut out the gossip and the entertainment and the fear mongering that the media feeds you. Replace it mostly with things that lead to self improvement.  Cut out the negative people from your life and replace them with people who share common dreams and aspirations are motivated enough to work on them everyday. Soon you will find the same motivation because habits are contagious whether good or bad!

7) Have Role Models, seek inspiration from them and learn from them

Knowing that someone before you has done exactly what you wanted to achieve before makes it much easier to believe you too can do it, doesn’t it? The simple way to achieve something you want to achieve is to learn from someone who has done it before. It doesn’t mean you ape them as circumstances are certainly different on a case by case basis. But on a general level the methods used by an individual that helped him succeed, especially those methods that have also been replicated by others with immensely successful results are a good blueprint to follow. So have role models, try and interact with them if you can and if you can’t then read about them, their psychology and their methods. Also learn about how they kept themselves motivated when they didn’t feel like working or when the going got tough. You will receive some amazing nuggets of wisdom that will be of great value to keep yourself motivated on your journey as well.

8) How To Stay Motivated : Compete with others.

People often say be your own competition. I disagree. I think competition with others when done in a healthy way will make you challenge your limits to the extreme in a way that would never be possible if you only decided to compete with yourself. When you see yourself making incremental progress you may be reasonably happy and content that you are making some progress, but it is when you compete with someone better than you that you really challenge yourself. The best cutting edge technological products we use today are a result of intense competition between companies.  Sports records and the limits of the human body is stretched everyday because of competition between athletes.  Man reached the moon because of competition between the USA and Soviet Union.  Competition when done in an ethical way brings out the absolute best we are capable of and motivates us to do things we would never do if there was not a challenge out there waiting for us.

9) Remind yourself that time is limited.

If there is one thing that everyone in the world shares more or less equally, it is time.  You can make back all your money but you can never make back time. In fact our time on earth is so limited that the future is never the right time to begin anything, the right time to begin anything is now. Procrastination won’t get you anywhere. Whether you want to live your life pursuing your goals while living happily in the moment and planning for the future or whether you want to waste it away on doing things you don’t even enjoy or will regret is a choice you have to make. The more you realize that time is limited, the more you will be motivated to start or keep working your goal or your dream project or some other dream before it becomes too late.

10)  Do not fear failure.

The fear of failure is one of the main reasons why people don’t get started on doing things or are not motivated enough to do so. After all why work hard on something when it might not work anyway, right? The problem with this kind of thinking is that ironically that this fear of failure paralyses you and inevitably leads to actual failure. The biggest cause of failure is either giving up too soon or not trying at all! The greatest winners of the world have failed far more often than the losers have ever tried. Because the winners do not fear failure, they don’t give up when they face it. It does not mean that they enjoy failure, it just means they are willing to accept the fact that everything in life that you need to win has a learning curve involved and every learning curve involves plenty of failures.

Those who are willing to face those failures, learn from those mistakes and try again and again eventually acquire enough skills and experience from those repeated failures that they learn to win effortlessly. Those who are afraid of failure on the other hand ironically become the biggest failures. Remember what Michael Jordan said,  I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Conclusion

I hope the 10 tips above have been useful and this article has given you the knowledge you need in order to learn how to stay motivated. However knowledge without application is useless. Knowledge with application becomes wisdom. So apply these tips in your life and see it change for the better.  It’s time to get going!
